Types of Shalat
There are two main types of shalat: fardhu (obligatory) and sunnah (optional). Fardhu shalat consists of five daily prayers: subuh (dawn), zuhur (noon), ashar (afternoon), maghrib (sunset), and isya (night). Fardhu shalat also includes jumat (Friday), idul fitri (end of Ramadan), idul adha (feast of sacrifice), and jenazah (funeral). Sunnah shalat consists of various prayers that are recommended to be performed before or after the fardhu shalat or at certain times or occasions. Some examples of sunnah shalat are: tahajjud (late night), dhuha (forenoon), witir (odd-numbered), istikharah (seeking guidance), tarawih (Ramadan night), awwabin (after maghrib), tasbih (glorification), hajat (need), syukur (thanksgiving), tawbah (repentance), and khusuf/khusuf (eclipse).
Times of Shalat
The times of shalat are determined by the position of the sun in the sky. The times of shalat vary depending on the location, season, and date. The times of shalat can be calculated using astronomical formulas or observed using natural signs. The times of shalat can also be found in calendars, apps, websites, or mosques. The times of shalat are as follows:
Subuh: from the appearance of the true dawn until the sunrise.
Zuhur: from the passing of the sun's zenith until the shadow of an object becomes equal to its length.
Ashar: from the end of zuhur until the shadow of an object becomes twice its length.
Maghrib: from the sunset until the disappearance of the red twilight.
Isya: from the end of maghrib until the middle of the night.
Tips to Improve the Quality of Shalat
To improve the quality of shalat, we need to prepare ourselves physically, mentally, and spiritually before performing shalat. Some tips to improve the quality of shalat are:
Perform thaharah (purification) by doing wudhu (ablution) or ghusl (bathing) according to the sunnah.
Wear clean and modest clothes that cover our awrah (private parts) according to the Islamic rules.
Choose a clean and quiet place to perform shalat that is free from distractions and interruptions.
Face the qiblah (direction of Ka'bah) by using a compass or other means.
Make niyyah (intention) in our heart for the type and number of raka'ah (units) of shalat that we are going to perform.
Recite takbiratul ihram (the opening takbir) by saying "Allahu akbar" (Allah is the greatest) and raise our hands to the level of our ears or shoulders.
Recite the opening supplication, surah al-Fatihah (the opening chapter of the Quran), and another surah or a portion of a surah in the first and second raka'ah.
Perform ruku' (bowing), i'tidal (standing up), sujud (prostrating), julus (sitting), and tashahhud (testimony of faith) in each raka'ah according to the sunnah.
Recite the closing supplication, salam (greeting of peace), and tasbih (glorification) after completing the shalat.
Reflect on the meaning and wisdom of the shalat and ask Allah SWT for forgiveness, guidance, and blessings.
