Legendary Israeli Swimming Coach Leonid Sheikhat Passes Away at 70
The Israeli swimming community bows its head at the passing of Leonid Sheikhat — former Israeli national team coach, a pillar of Hapoel Jerusalem, and a professional and human beacon who dedicated his life to the sport, leaving an indelible mark.
Following a distinguished coaching career in the Soviet Union and Kazakhstan, Sheikhat immigrated to Israel in the early 1990s. Within a short time, he became an integral part of the local elite swimming scene, leading the Israeli national team (alongside Dr. Leonid Kaufman) through three inspiring appearances at the Olympic Games. Concurrently, he guided and developed the Hapoel Jerusalem club for nearly 30 years as both coach and professional director.
More than an exceptional professional, Leonid was a mentor. Over the years, he nurtured hundreds of swimmers — from Israeli champions to Olympic athletes — including Vadim Alexeev, Yoav Meiri, Tomer Frankel, Alexei Glivinski, David Gamburg, and Nastia Korotkov. In the summer of 2024, his contributions were rightfully recognized when the Israel Swimming Association awarded him a lifetime achievement honor.
Statement from the Israel Swimming Association:
"The Israel Swimming Association bows its head at the passing of Leonid Sheikhat, of blessed memory, one of Israel's leading swimming coaches for decades. Leonid dedicated a major part of his life to Israeli swimming, raised and accompanied generations of swimmers and coaches, coached at Hapoel Jerusalem for about 30 years, and led the national team in three Olympic Games appearances. He was an integral part of Israeli swimming and left a deep professional and personal legacy. We share in the grief of his sons Igal and Avi, his family, friends, and many students. May his memory be a blessing."
Generations of swimmers, coaches, and friends mourn the departure of a man who made the pool his home and swimming his life's work.
